 Climate Theme Bonds: a major new Asset Class brewing by Christopher Iggo, CIO of AXA Fixed Income

Chris Iggo, who chaired the conference, opened with thought-provoking questions around:

- The private sector’s ability to provide the necessary funding to mitigate and adapt to climate change, and the potential need for contributions from the public sector (as major studies have suggested that private sector investors will likely be responsible for financing over 85% of the global transition to a low-carbon economy);
- The ability of clean investments to deliver the same level of returns as those delivered by mainstream investments;
- The importance for long-term, active asset managers of looking for responsible investments targeted at global climate challenges

 Securitisation of Renewable Energy project debt & green bonds  by Jason Langley, Corporate Finance manager at AXA Real Estate

Jason Langley then presented his views on the securitisation of renewable energy projects which served as a warm up to his keynote address to the London Accord Spring Conference on May 18th:

- Renewable energy assets have a suitable cost profile for debt finance,

- How the combination of predictable income – from feed-in tariffs – coupled with low variable costs means that significant levels of debt can be used to finance the high upfront costs of the renewable energy plant.

 Biodiversity and economic growth: a fusional relationship by Aude Brezac, Responsible Investment analyst at AXA IM

Aude’s article was distributed during the conference. It highlights the value biodiversity represents for a large number of industries and service providers who are essential contributors to the engine of economic growth.
